SHIVAMOGGA: The case of a Shivamogga farmer, whose bones were exhumed from his fields 18 months after he went missing, has reached a logical conclusion with a district sessions court convicting his wife and her lover for the murder. Last week, the duo was sentenced to imprisonment till death.
C Sunita, 39, and her friend Manjunath, 31, residents of Yogi Malali in Malur, Thirthahalli taluk of Shivamogga district, had strangled Chandrashekhar alias Chandru in his house on September 1, 2014. They took the body to the farm beside his house and buried it there. On September 18, Sunita filed a complaint with Malur police stating that her husband had gone missing.
In April 2015, police recovered a decomposed body from a forest near Thirthahalli. Sunita, who visited the spot on directions from police, claimed that it was her husband’s body. But Chandrashekhar’s parents dismissed Sunita’s claims stating the physical descriptions of the body did not match that of their son.
Thirthahalli police extracted the bone samples from the body and sent it for DNA test to Davanagere FSL along with blood samples of Chandrashekhar’s minor daughter. A few months later, the report came negative.
Meanwhile, Chandrashekhar’s parents approached police, saying they had serious doubts about Sunita as she did not appear to be rattled by her husband’s disappearance. In the meantime, her affair with Manjunath became the talk of the town and both were seen together in public places. Sensing foul play, police subjected Sunita to intense interrogation, during which she spilled the beans. They soon picked up Manjunath too.
Police said Sunita and Manjunath, also a farmer from the same village, were in a relationship. Chandrashekar came to know about this and confronted Sunita. Sunita and Manjunath then decided to kill Chandrashekar.
"They hit Chandrashekhar on his head and strangled him to death when he was asleep. They dragged the body to the paddy farm and buried him the same night. The duo dug a pit and stuffed the body into it, folding legs and hands," police said.
When police exhumed the body in the presence of a tahsildar and forensic officials, they found only a bundle of bones. DNA tests confirmed that the remains were that of Chandrashekar. Sunita and Manjunath were arrested on April 30, 2016. They have to pay a fine of Rs 1.3 lakh of which Rs 1 lakh will be given for the education of Chandrashekhar’s minor son and daughter.
