AHMEDABAD: A 41-year-old man living in an apartment in Vastrapur area of the city on Monday afternoon committed suicide by jumping from the terrace of his flat in front of cops. This occurred when he was seeking money from his wife while standing on the edge of the terrace, but as she called police who arrived there, he jumped off and ended life.
The deceased has been identified as Shravan Damani (41), a resident of Shikhar apartment, who left behind his wife — Archana and two kids—Muskan (19) and Kairav (7).
Before ending his life, Damani wrote his suicide note in which he wished his kids "Happy New Year" as their father was ending life on the last day of the year. He had also asked his wife to change her surname after his death and wished them a happy life ahead.
"On Monday afternoon, my daughter called me up and said that Shravan had left some note after which I left from my tuition class in Narol area of the city and rushed to my home. I soon rushed to terrace where I started talking to my husband whom I assured to give Rs 4,000. As I had informed police also, cops reached there in front of whom he jumped from the terrace," said Damani’s wife Archana in her statement before Vastrapur police.
She further stated, "My husband was not working for many years. We are settled in Vastrapur since 2008. Since then, my husband used to tell me that he was doing some big work. For last year or so, he started picking up quarrels over petty things and started taking money from moneylender who used to visit my house demanding money from us."
On December 11, he had threatened to commit suicide if his wife did not give him Rs 5,000. At that time, she gave him money and made him understand not to end his life. He got convinced but he again left a note indicating that he would commit suicide, she said in the statement.
