Bareilly: In a gruesome incident, a 22-year-old woman allegedly burnt her husband, who was two years younger than her, as she didn’t like his dark complexion.
The incident took place early on Monday when deceased Satyaveer Singh was sleeping in his cot and his wife Prem Shri set him on fire after pouring petrol. The couple was married for over two years and has a five-month-old girl.

Inspector Sehdev Singh, station house officer (SHO) of Kurh Fatehgarh, said that initially they had registered an FIR under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code but later it was converted to section 302 (murder) after the man succumbed to burns during treatment late on Monday.

Police said that Mahendra Singh Yadav, his wife and another son had left for some work in the field leaving son Satyaveer and daughter-in-law Shri at their house. Shri woke up around 5.45 am and lit her husband on fire. And in the process, the woman also suffered burn injuries on her legs. The SHO added, "Hearing his screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and doused the fire. They then took the couple to a nearby hospital. From there they were referred to higher facility in Moradabad where the husband succumbed to burns and the woman is undergoing treatment. We are investigating the matter and we will record statement of the accused soon."

Meanwhile, deceased Satyaveer’s brother Harveer Singh said that his sister-in-law didn’t like his brother because of his dark complexion. Harveer said, "They got married around two years ago and they hadn’t seen each other before marriage. She always commented on my brother’s dark complexion but we never thought that she would take such a step."
