MUMBAI: Nearly three weeks after a 32-year-old man was found dead on the railway tracks between Mulund and Nahur on February 27, the GRP registered a case of abetment of suicide against his wife and in-laws. Satish Ghodke, the deceased, was a mechanical engineer and lived in Pune with his wife and minor son. Police found four draft text messages typed out on his phone which said that he was being mentally harassed by his wife. The GRP will transfer the case to Pune police for further investigation.
On February 27, the railway police found Ghodke's body on the tracks. From the nature of injuries suffered, it was concluded by the cops that he had been hit by a train. The police however couldn't track down the train's motorman and recorded an accidental death. Ghodke's identity was established after investigators went through his phone records and touched base with his Nanded based parents.
Ghodke's father, Shivling, submitted a written complaint to the GRP against his daughter-in-law in March. An FIR, under section 306 of IPC, was registered on March 17 by Kurla GRP.
The FIR says that Ghodke tied the knot in May 2016 with Shubhangi and the marriage was troubled right from the beginning. He was employed with a Pune-based firm at the time. According to the complaint, his wife suspected his fidelity, wouldnt let him talk to his son nor would she permit his parents to visit their home in Pune.
During the lockdown, Ghodke quit the job and moved to Nanded. He joined a financial company there in 2021. "When his wife eventually moved to Nanded, the two would bicker frequently. Shubhangi wanted him to move back to Pune and find a job. In February 2022, he moved back to Pune and joined a bank but their marital woes did not end," said Shivling, in his statement to the police. He added that after his son's death, his wife did not come to Mumbai nor did she or her family attend his last rites in Nanded.
"Ghodke did not have any friends or relatives in Mumbai. It is not clear why he travelled here from Pune. We registered a case based on his father's complaint," said Smita Dhakne, senior inspector, Kurla GRP.
