Four people were arrested on Thursday for allegedly murdering a 47-year-old resident of Maharal village in Kalyan. One of the arrested accused is the wife of the deceased.
On Monday, the naked body of Kewalchand More was found in a pond with its face smashed. The police also found a blood-smeared piece of a wooden chair and the deceased’s clothes.
"We fished out the body from the pond," said Police Inspector Ashok Worlikar of Titwala police station.
On Wednesday, they got information from their Ulhasnagar counterparts about a missing person’s complaint that matched details of the body given by the Titwala police.
The complainant, Alka More (45), confirmed it was her husband’s body.
The police suspected Alka as they found many inconsistencies in her account. "When we visited her house, we found a chair with a broken leg. After sustained interrogation, Alka confessed to the crime," said Worlikar.
The police said Alka, who had an affair with one Bhagwan Gaikwad (30), had frequent quarrels with her husband. She connived with her lover, her daughter Jyoti Chanda (25) and son-in-law Amol (28) to kill him.
On the night of the alleged murder, Amol had a drink with the deceased. He hit him on the head, smashed his face with a heavy stone and pushed him in the pond, the police added.
All four have been remanded in police custody for seven days.
