A 47-year-old Kolkata banker hanged himself while on a video call with his Ahmedabad-based wife on Sunday night.

By Rajesh Saha: In a bizarre incident, a 47-year-old Kolkata banker committed suicide by hanging himself while on a video call with his Ahmedabad-based wife on Sunday night.

According to sources, when the deceased, Prasun Banerjee, committed suicide, the wife called his neighbours. One of the neighbours called the Kolkata Police headquarters and informed them about the matter.

On being informed, a police team from the Garfa police station reached his residence and broke open the door, which was locked from the inside. They found the man in an unconscious state and rushed him to MR Bangur Hospital, where he was declared brought dead at 5:35 am.

Police said that Banerjee, a resident of Purbachal Main Road, had hanged himself with a nylon rope from a hook affixed to the ceiling of his living room while talking with his wife, Aparna Banerjee, who was in Ahmedabad in Gujarat, over a video call.

According to sources from the police department, a suicide note was found at the banker’s residence.

They said it was learned that the wife of the deceased suspected that Banerjee had an extramarital affair and confronted him, putting him under stress.

Police said the deceased was a manager at IDBI Bank’s treasury department in the Shakespeare Sarani Branch was earlier posted in Ahmedabad.

He is survived by two daughters, who study in Ahmedabad and live with their mother.

Police said, "Necessary arrangements are being made to hold an inquest and an autopsy of the deceased. In this regard, a case of unnatural death has been registered at Garfa police station in Kolkata. The investigation is underway and all aspects are being investigated thoroughly."
