Wife, 3 others sentenced to life for cop's 2016 murder

CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh district court awarded life imprisonment to four persons, including a woman who murdered her husband to get married to someone else. They were convicted under Section 302 and 201 of the IPC.
Pronouncing the quantum of sentence on Friday, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 60,000 on them. The accused are Sukhdeep Kaur, 33, wife of the deceased, Jasvir Singh, Sahib Singh, 22, a BCA first-year student at CGC, Landran, Gurjinder Singh, 23, alias Neeta, who was a BTech first-year student at Thapar College, Patiala and Jagtar Singh alias Rinku, 24, a student of hotel management at CGC, Landran at the time.
Sukhdeep Kaur had an affair with an NRI and in order to marry him, she hired three persons to murder her husband. The deceased, Jasvir Singh, was posted at the Punjab Police Commando Complex.
During arguments, the prosecution demanded death penalty and the convict pleaded for leniency on various grounds. The convicts were booked on March 5, 2016. Sukhdeep Kaur, a resident of Raipur Khurd, Chandigarh had given a written statement regarding her husband Jasvir Singh going missing.
She said her husband, 40, went to work at 5am on March 3, 2016. However, she said he did not reach his office or return home. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising inspector Baldev Kumar and inspector Ranjit Singh of the crime branch was constituted by senior officers.
Technical and circumstantial evidence pointed to the involvement of Sukhdeep Kaur, who was thoroughly interrogated. Sukhdeep confessed to have murdered her husband Jasvir with the help of Sahib Singh and others.
The convicts said they mixed sleeping pills in Jasvir's food and when he fell unconscious, they took off his clothes and tied his hands. After that, they took him to Mandouli village near Rajpura, district Patiala, where they threw him into the Bhakhra Canal.
