A 27-year-old man in Maharashtra’s Thane district hanged himself to death and livestreamed the suicide on social media, news agency PTI reported.

According to the police, the young man, a resident of Kalyan who used to work as a ward boy at a local hospital, took the extreme step after his long-time girlfriend rejected his marriage proposal.

During his final moments which he streamed live on Facebook, the man said he had been in a relationship with a woman for three years and had even provided her financial support.

A preliminary probe revealed that the couple fought frequently and during one such argument last week, the woman reportedly told him to "die", following which he decided to end his life in a fit of rage, a police official told PTI.

Police have registered a case of accidental death in the matter. Further investigation is underway.
