PITHORAGARH: A day after he was booked for allegedly killing his wife, a 36-year-old teacher at a government-aided school on Wednesday committed suicide by hanging from a tree in Lachher near Pithoragarh-Madmanley Road.
On Tuesday, Navin Kapri’s father-in-law Krishnanand Bhatt had alleged that his daughter Kamna, also a teacher, was strangled to death by her husband for dowry. Bhatt then filed a dowry harassment case and Navin Kapri and his mother Bhuwneshwari Kapri were subsequently booked by police. The couple has a three-year-old daughter.
On Wednesday, police reached Navin’s house in Daula village for interrogation, but couldn’t find him. According to police officers, Navin’s brother informed them that he had gone out to consult a lawyer and hadn’t returned home.
Station house officer (SHO) of Pithoragarh police station PS Negi told TOI that they began searching for Navin after he didn’t answer his phone.
"We then traced his location to Pithoragarh-Madmanley Road at Lachher, 17 km from Pithoragarh town, and sent a police team there. The team found Navin’s bike lying abandoned on the road. Upon searching further, the police team found his body handing from a tree in nearby jungle," Negi said.
Negi said that prime facie, the case appeared to be that of suicide, but added that they are waiting for a post-mortem report to ascertain the cause of death.Navin’s family members said that he was upset after his father-in-law accused him of killing his wife.
On Tuesday, Kamna (33) died on her way to the hospital after she allegedly fell unconscious. The police haven’t received Kamna’s post-mortem report yet.
