Cop found dead on tracks after senior’s wife files rape case

PUNE/NASHIK: A 37-year-old police sub-inspector (PSI) posted with Amboli police in Mumbai was found dead on the railway tracks adjacent to Sangam bridge at Shivajinagar near Pune on Tuesday morning. He is suspected to have ended his life after the wife of a senior police officer lodged a complaint of rape against him with Nashik police late on Monday.
Manoj Khandale, GRP inspector at Pune railway station, told TOI: "We have registered a case of accidental death. It is a case of suicide. We do not know why he was in Pune."
Khandale said PSI Sajan Sanap, a resident of Nashik, appeared disturbed after the case was lodged against him with Upanagar police station. "However, we did not find any suicide note on him," he said.
Shrikrishna Kokate, deputy commissioner of police, Nashik, told TOI that the families of both Sanap and the 36-year-old woman were called to the police station. When she decided to go ahead with the rape complaint, police registered the offence. While the proces was on, Sanap left the police station and did not return.
In her complaint, the woman said Sanap, who is also married with children, first met her on May 31, 2014, through her husband. Both families are from Nashik Road area. She alleged that he threatened to post some private pictures of hers, which he claimed to have had with him, online. The woman said Sanap once forcibly made her consume alcohol and raped her. On several occasions thereafter, he would go to her residence at any time of the night and rape her, she alleged. The rapes and threats continued till October 4, she said.Assistant police inspector M B Raut, said the woman has named one more person who used to stalk her.
Late on Tuesday, Nashik police were in the process of filing a case of abetment of suicide against the woman.
