Guwahati, Jan. 5: Police today arrested BCCI scorer Anupam Das's girlfriend in connection with his death, which is now being suspected as murder.

Das, 30, was found dead last evening on the ground floor of an apartment where his girlfriend, Rimjhim Das, resides on the first floor. The apartment is in the Santipur area of the city.

The police initially suspected it to be a case of suicide. Stab wounds were found on his chest and neck besides head injuries. "We also found a blood-soaked knife near the body. We have sent the knife to the forensic science laboratory to retrieve the fingerprints on it," sub-inspector Ranjit Kakoti, the investigating officer of the case, told The Telegraph today. Bloodstains were also found on the floor of his girlfriend's residence.

Rimjhim, 25, an advocate from Sivasagar district, was produced at the court of Kamrup (metro) chief judicial magistrate later this afternoon and remanded in three-day police custody. The police said the accused claimed that Das had committed suicide.

"The girl had admitted that she had a fight with Das in her house but denied murdering him," the investigating officer said. Sources said Das and his girlfriend were going through a rough patch for quite a long time. "Das was often found in a bad mood. He had told his friend that he is having problems with his girlfriend. Their fights started around November last year," a source said.

The post-mortem was conducted at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital today and the report is awaited.

A source in the hospital said, "It is unlikely for a person to stab himself in the chest to commit suicide. Moreover, the perforation in the body suggests horizontal stabs whereas if a person tries to commit suicide it would have been an angular stab wound. A horizontal stab suggests he could have been murdered by someone of his own height, which is around 6 feet."

The police said if Rimjhim had not committed the crime herself then she might have taken somebody's help.

"It is unlikely that she committed the crime herself as Das was much taller and stronger than her and he should have been able to easily overpower her," Kakoti said.

The police expect that her interrogation in custody will help them tie up the loose ends in the case.

Das, who started as a state-level scorer, was appointed as a BCCI panel scorer five years ago.
