Dera Bassi, January 10

A 35-year-old man, Lakwinder Singh, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at Bhagwanpur village, Dera Bassi. The police have registered a case against his wife for abetting the suicide.

Lakhwinder Singh, father of two, took the extreme step on the night intervening January 9 and 10, said sources.

Kulwant Singh, father of the deceased, complained to the police, stating that his son Lakhwinder Singh had married Rani (30), a resident of Mohali district, in 2011. He further stated that for the initial few months, Rani lived happily with them but later started quarreling with Lakhwinder over minor issues.

The police said Kulwant Singh told them that the couple had an argument over an issue around 1 am last night. An hour later, they heard cries from their room. When Kulwant Singh rushed to the room, he found his son lying on the floor. There was an injury mark on his neck, said the police.

Mohinder Singh, SHO, Dera Bassi, said they had registered a case against Rani on the complaint of the victim’s father. No arrest has been made so far. A case under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against Rani at the Dera Bassi police station. The post-mortem of the deceased will be conducted at the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, tomorrow.

Lakhwinder Singh worked in a factory and had two children—Gurpreet (7) and Simmi (2).
