Life for working professionals these days has turned into a nightmare as failed marriages and inability to spend quality time together have led to depression and suicides. On Wednesday, a 41-year-old Nalasopara man hanged himself after sending his wife a suicide selfie as she had served him a notice for divorce. They were unable to give adequate time to each other due to work commitments.

According to Nalasopara police, Jude Mascarenhas, 41, a resident of Tanishq Apartments in Nalasopara (West) was found hanging from the ceiling fan with a pink dupatta in his bedroom. He was depressed after his wife Doris, a teacher with St Francis De Sales High school, sent him a divorce notice as they had been fighting over family problems. Jude's Facebook posts show he wanted to make his marriage work. In August he posted: "Marriages should last for lifetime", and a picture of a message from his wife.

"The husband before hanging himself sent a selfie to his wife on Whatsapp informing her about his decision. She immediately informed the police, but the bedroom door was latched," said a Nalasopara police official.

"We have taken the wife's statement. She said they didn't spend enough time together and fought a lot. She had served him a divorce notice and he had been depressed because of it," said another Nalasopara police official.

"He hung himself on Tuesday night. A post-morten has been conducted and the body has been handed over to family members," added the official.

"The wife stated that she was busy teaching students and took private tuitions. They were married for four years and had a lot of differences," said Ravindra Badgujar, police inspector, Nalasopara police station.

"We have registered a case of suicide and are investigating further. The husband had sent a selfie to the wife but it seems that she saw the message a little late. We broke into the apartment. But, found him dead," said Badgujar.
